Dr. Karin Hilgersom is set to retire from her role as President of Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) after nearly a decade of leadership. Her tenure has been marked by innovation, inclusivity, and growth within the college community. Dr. Jeffrey Alexander, TMCC’s Vice President of Academic Affairs, will succeed her.
Hilgersom began her career at Lane Community College in 1986 as part-time faculty and later moved to Spokane Community College. She earned advanced degrees from the University of Oregon and served as president of Sullivan County Community College before joining TMCC.
During her presidency, Hilgersom oversaw significant developments at TMCC, including the expansion of bachelor’s programs and workforce training initiatives with companies like Panasonic and Tesla. The college also achieved Hispanic-Serving Institution status under her leadership.
Hilgersom emphasized a culture of innovation at TMCC, encouraging the use of Open Educational Resources to reduce costs for students. Lisha Allison, former TMCC Student Government Association president, praised Hilgersom's support for inclusivity and diversity at the institution.
Nancy McCormick from EDAWN highlighted Hilgersom's commitment to sustainability, noting her participation in global climate discussions such as COP28. Under Hilgersom’s guidance, TMCC received a Green-Ribbon School Award from the U.S. Department of Education in 2020.
TMCC underwent significant infrastructure improvements during Hilgersom's tenure, including renovations and new facilities that align with its academic mission and sustainability goals.
As she prepares for retirement, Hilgersom reflects on the progress made at TMCC but acknowledges areas for further improvement in student retention and graduation rates. Her legacy includes collaboration and dedication to public higher education's mission.
