The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) is collaborating with boating safety advocates in the United States and Canada to emphasize safe boating practices during National Safe Boating Week, which runs from May 17 to May 23, and throughout the summer.
Game Warden Captain Buck Tingle, who serves as the Boating Law Administrator for NDOW, highlighted the potential for a great boating season in Nevada. "We want everyone to get out and enjoy all Nevada has to offer, but we also want you and your family to return home safely. The best way to do that is by taking a boating education course and wearing a life jacket," he stated.
Statistics from the U.S. Coast Guard indicate that drowning accounted for 80% of recreational boating fatalities in 2023, with 87% of those victims not wearing life jackets.
The week marks the beginning of the 2025 National Safe Boating Campaign, focusing on promoting life jacket use under the theme: Wear It! Capt. Tingle emphasized this priority: "Our number one priority is to get more people to wear their life jacket. People often think of life jackets as bulky or uncomfortable, but they’ve come a long way. Today’s life jackets are stylish, comfortable—and most importantly, they save lives."
Additionally, NDOW advises against alcohol consumption while boating due to its status as a leading factor in fatal accidents. Alcohol impairs vision, balance, and decision-making—critical elements for safe boat operation.
