Sophia Roman, a 26-year-old student at Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC), has completed her studies with three associate degrees in theatre, communications, and psychology. She also received the Sam Lieberman Regents’ Award for Student Scholarship for 2025. Despite a challenging upbringing marked by personal loss and responsibility, Roman managed to excel academically.
Roman was nominated for the award by TMCC Theatre Instructor Shea King and TMCC Counselor Alexander Day. Reflecting on receiving the award, Roman said, “I was pretty shocked. I honestly didn't anticipate winning the Sam Lieberman award.” King noted Roman's dedication despite her personal challenges: “She was having to raise nieces and nephews... I just told her to bring them to class.”
Roman's journey began after losing her father to cancer and growing up with a mother who struggled with addiction. As a teenager, she became the primary caregiver for her sister’s children when her sister was incarcerated. Despite these challenges, Roman pursued higher education at TMCC after earning her high school equivalency diploma.
Throughout her time at TMCC, Roman maintained strong academic performance while being involved in every production of the college’s theatre program. Her role as Ismene in a reimagined Greek tragedy highlighted both her talent and growth as an actor.
Roman plans to continue studying theatre at the University of Nevada, Reno, aiming for a bachelor’s degree followed by a Master of Fine Arts in theatre. She hopes to eventually teach theatre herself. Expressing gratitude towards TMCC instructors who supported her journey, she stated: “Education literally saved my life.”
The story of Sophia Roman is one of resilience and determination that serves as an inspiration to other adult learners facing obstacles in their pursuit of education.
