Nevada Attorney General Aaron D. Ford announced the successful passage of Assembly Bill 44, a legislative measure aimed at curbing price-fixing on essential goods and services in the state. The bill, a key focus for AG Ford during the 2025 Legislative Session, seeks to address instances where prices are artificially inflated beyond natural market dynamics.
AG Ford stated, "The passage of this bill is a victory for all Nevadans. It gives my office the tools we need to fight predatory practices that strain folks' wallets and directly affect their bottom line." He also expressed gratitude towards his staff and the Legislature for their efforts in advancing this legislation.
Assembly Bill 44 has successfully moved through both houses of the Nevada Legislature and now awaits approval from the governor.
The bill targets unfair price-fixing affecting essential goods and services including food, clothing, gasoline, pharmaceuticals, housing, utilities, transportation, telecommunication services, and internet access. It exempts certain providers if their pricing is regulated by governmental agencies at any level.
While normal market-driven price increases remain permissible under Assembly Bill 44, it criminalizes deceptive practices that result in significant price hikes violating the Nevada Deceptive Trade Practices Act. The bill empowers the Attorney General's Office with investigative and enforcement capabilities under the Nevada Unfair Trade Practice Act to address violations.
