TMCC's TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program marked the beginning of summer with a significant initiative during the 2025 #TRIOWorks Day of Service. On June 16, the program initiated a donation campaign to support TMCC’s Wizard’s Warehouse pantry. This effort emphasized that college success begins with addressing basic needs. Students, staff, and supporters participated in this initiative, reinforcing the message that supported students thrive and subsequently help others.

The event also included an orientation for 20 students preparing for a College Transfer Trip to California State University, Sacramento. This trip is intended as more than just a campus tour; it serves as a launchpad. By visiting a Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) college, students gain insight into possibilities after TMCC, especially when financial aid and regional partnerships facilitate transferring.

This opportunity holds particular significance for many in TRIO SSS who are first-generation college students or are navigating higher education with limited financial resources. Experiencing a university campus and hearing from transfer alumni can be transformative.

“As a first-generation college student, many of our students don't get the opportunity to explore opportunities outside of TMCC as transfer students. The goal of the orientation is for the students to learn about the options that they have for continuing their education and their career beyond TMCC,” said Dr. Maria Sandra Jimenez, Director of the TRIO SSS program.

Since 2020, TMCC’s TRIO SSS program has supported over 650 students through advising, academic planning, transfer guidance, and more. Many have earned degrees and transferred to four-year institutions before returning to Northern Nevada to build careers and contribute to their communities.

One student shared her experience: “My name is Alyssa, and I am currently a theatre student here at Truckee Meadows Community College. I've been a part of the TRIO SSS program for about a year now, and it has very much helped me improve my life. I finished this last semester with a 4.0 simply because of the time that I spent in the TRIO SSS office; it's provided me with that sort of stability when I don't have that at home.”

The renewal of the TRIO SSS grant ensures continued impact through another five-year cycle until 2030. The continuation award secures funding for personalized student support, transfer preparation, and community-building efforts.

TRIO SSS students demonstrate what it means to serve and succeed together.
