A new project, the Campus for Hope, is set to make a significant impact on the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) community. The 900-bed facility aims to serve individuals experiencing homelessness and is located next to CSN's Charleston campus. Modeled after San Antonio's Haven for Hope, it seeks to address a growing crisis in the area.
Kim Jefferies, CEO of the nonprofit leading the effort, highlighted alarming statistics at a recent meeting with CSN leadership: “We’ve seen a 450 percent increase in family homelessness, a 90 percent rise among women, and a 46 percent increase in young adults ages 18 to 24 experiencing homelessness in just the last year. The need in our region is urgent.”
Dr. James McCoy, Vice President of Academic Affairs at CSN, emphasized the educational opportunities this partnership offers: “This facility creates new ways for our students to learn, serve, and connect to real-world experiences.” He mentioned potential academic and workforce ties through clinical placements and internships.
CSN President Dr. Stacy Klippenstein described the facility as more than just a building: “This is more than a facility — it’s a connection point.” He sees it as an opportunity for students to gain hands-on training while supporting their community.
The Campus for Hope will have structured operations with no walk-ups allowed. Guests will be referred through partner agencies and vetted accordingly. Arnold Vasquez, Chief of University Police Services at CSN, remarked on its potential: “This appears to be fantastic model with a lot of potential.”
The project involves land leased from the state for 50 years. CSN’s Early Childhood Lab has been relocated temporarily due to construction but will receive new facilities funded by Campus of Hope leadership once a permanent location is secured.
In total, over 300 jobs are expected to be created by this initiative, fostering collaboration between CSN and regional nonprofit service providers.
“There will be disruptions along that way — and that’s natural,” said McCoy. “But we have an exciting opportunity to shape this partnership in a way that aligns with our mission and strengthens our campus community.”
