United Way of Southern Nevada (UWSN) has announced the launch of United We Prepare, a new initiative designed to help residents in Southern Nevada improve their readiness for both natural and man-made disasters. The program is supported by Verizon and will offer preparedness workshops, community outreach, and support for nonprofit programs.

The first disaster preparedness workshop is scheduled for August 14 at the North Las Vegas Alexander Library. The event is free and open to the public, with attendees receiving disaster preparedness kits.

Samuel Rudd, President and CEO of UWSN, stated: “At United Way of Southern Nevada, building a resilient community means preparing our neighbors before disaster strikes and staying by their side through recovery. With Verizon’s partnership, we’re strengthening our community’s ability to prepare for and respond to disasters. By focusing on the unique needs of Southern Nevada, we’re empowering residents, nonprofits, and neighborhoods to stay safe, informed, and ready to face future emergencies.”

Data from FEMA’s 2024 National Household Survey shows that fewer than half of Americans have a disaster plan in place. UWSN plans to host eight workshops throughout Clark County with the goal of increasing confidence and readiness among local residents.

In 2024, UWSN worked with FEMA, United Way Worldwide, and 22 local nonprofit organizations through the Emergency Food and Shelter Program. This collaboration provided emergency housing, food assistance, and utility support to more than 61,000 people in Southern Nevada.

With this new initiative, UWSN seeks to expand its focus beyond crisis response by equipping families with information and resources before emergencies occur. More details about upcoming workshops can be found at https://uwsn.org/beready.
