Representatives from the Jack C. Davis Observatory, including Dr. Thomas Herring, will participate in the rescheduled Cosmos in the Desert event on Saturday, August 16 at Lahontan State Recreation Area’s Beach No. 3. Volunteers from the Western Nevada Astronomical Society are also set to assist during the evening.
The event, organized by the Nevada Division of State Parks and the Division of Outdoor Recreation, aims to celebrate Nevada’s dark skies with activities such as guided exploration, storytelling, and hands-on experiences for attendees of all ages.
“We will have a few telescopes for viewing, and I'm presenting a ‘night sky tour,’ pointing out constellations and some notable mashed eye things in the sky,” said Dr. Herring.
Attendees can also expect an astrophotography demonstration, a virtual reality night sky experience, a nocturnal wildlife walk, food trucks, and other activities. The entry fee is $5 for parking for Nevada residents and $10 for nonresidents.
