Great Basin College electrical instructor Amber Cannon recently provided electrical safety training at the Hecla Greens Creek mine in Alaska. The training focused on the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70E Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace and included five technicians from the mine.
The two-day course ended with a high voltage training exercise, where participants applied their learning to real-world scenarios. They used job planning skills and NFPA 70E charts to identify appropriate safety barricades and select proper personal protective equipment for specific job situations.
Cannon commented on the positive outcome of the session, stating, "I think it went well and was a huge step towards building a stronger relationship with Hecla. They sponsored an electrical student last year, after visiting our campus. They are sponsoring the same student in the Instrumentation program this school year."
Following the success of this training, Cannon is scheduled to return to Greens Creek mine over Labor Day weekend to conduct another session.
The college continues to engage with industry partners through contract training opportunities such as these, which help support students both within Nevada and beyond its borders.
