Alecia Lopez, a student at the College of Southern Nevada (CSN), has been named an inaugural 2025 Chime Workforce Scholar. She is among 200 community college students across the country to receive this recognition, which comes with a $1,000 scholarship from the Chime Scholars Foundation.
Recipients of the Chime Workforce Scholarship are selected based on academic achievement, participation in campus activities, leadership qualities, and readiness for their chosen careers. The foundation awarded a total of $200,000 to support students enrolled in programs that prepare them for immediate entry into the workforce.
Lopez is studying Hospitality at CSN and aims to become an event planner with plans to eventually start her own business. “I’m passionate about creating events that leave lasting memories,” Lopez said. “I want to craft experiences that connect with people and inspire joy and community.”
The scholarship will help Lopez pay for educational expenses related to workforce preparation, such as certification fees, uniforms, and tools required for her field. The Chime Workforce Scholarship differs from many traditional scholarships by focusing on supporting students who need resources beyond classroom instruction.
The program was established by the Chime Scholars Foundation in partnership with Phi Theta Kappa to provide community college students with funding needed for tuition, textbooks, or supplies necessary for starting their careers. This approach is intended to reduce obstacles that may prevent students from reaching their professional goals.
For Lopez, receiving the scholarship represents more than just financial aid; she views it as support for her development as a future leader in her community. As she continues her studies at CSN, she remains focused on gaining skills needed to design meaningful events that bring people together.
The Chime Workforce Scholars program underscores the important role of community colleges in preparing students for employment through practical training and leadership opportunities.
