Sierra Murphy, a single mother of three, has launched a new career after completing the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) program at Western Nevada College (WNC). Murphy faced initial challenges with the CDL permit exam and financial obstacles but received assistance from EmployNV and Shareena Kaloti, coordinator of WNC’s Realizing Opportunities for American Dream to Succeed (ROADS) program.

“Thanks to the incredible support of these dedicated women, I was given the opportunity to pursue my dream,” Murphy said.

Murphy credited instructor Joe Terry for making the CDL coursework accessible. “The CDL program was an amazing experience,” she said. “I want to especially acknowledge our instructor, Joe Terry, who explained everything so clearly and made the learning process manageable. Thanks to his guidance, my classmates and I were all able to pass.”

After finishing her training, Murphy secured employment with the Washoe County School District. She expressed gratitude for those who helped her along the way: “Thank you to everyone who made this opportunity possible. It has truly been a life-changing experience.”

WNC President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe highlighted Murphy’s journey as representative of WNC’s goals. “Sierra’s journey reflects the very heart of WNC’s mission — empowering individuals to overcome challenges, gain new skills, and transform their lives,” he said. “Her determination, combined with the dedication of our instructors and support programs like ROADS, shows what’s possible when education and community come together. We are incredibly proud of Sierra and excited to see her succeed in her new career.”
