Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) is set to introduce a new non-credit certification program focused on trail building and maintenance, supported by a $164,744 grant from the Greg Nelson Trust. The initiative, named the Trail Skills Project: A National Framework, A Local Opportunity, will be offered through TMCC’s Educational Programs Inspiring the Community (EPIC) Department.
The program is established in memory of Gregory Warren Nelson, known for his enthusiasm for outdoor activities and cycling. Frankie Sue Del Papa, Trustee of the Greg Nelson Trust, stated, “Greg was a friend of many and an enemy of none. He had a great heart and a gentle but extremely generous spirit,” highlighting Nelson's positive influence.
The certification aims to provide both beginner and intermediate training in trail construction and upkeep. It targets professionals as well as volunteers and outdoor enthusiasts interested in contributing to the maintenance of local trails. The curriculum has been developed with input from regional land management and conservation organizations.
Key supporters include the Nevada Division of Outdoor Recreation, Nevada State Parks, and the Tahoe Rim Trail Association. The project will also work alongside TMCC’s Wildland Fire Training Program to help train participants in wildfire prevention strategies and promote sustainable access to wildlands in the Reno–Tahoe and Lake Tahoe areas.
