A new campground and a segment of a regional bike path have received approval from the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Governing Board. The campground will be located on a 9-acre private parcel accessed from lower Elk Point Road. The development includes campsites, a community lodge and pavilion, central kitchen and restrooms, affordable employee housing with deed restrictions, electric vehicle parking spaces, and traffic reduction features such as electric shuttles and complimentary bikes for campers.
The board also approved a 2.4-mile portion of the North Tahoe Regional Trail. This section will link Tahoe Vista to Carnelian Bay in Placer County and is part of the Environmental Improvement Program (EIP). The full trail will extend six miles off-highway from North Tahoe Regional Park in Tahoe Vista west to Dollar Hill. There it will connect with an existing bike path leading to Tahoe City and additional trails along the West Shore.
TRPA Executive Director Julie Regan commented on the significance of these projects: “We are consistently seeing more projects come forward that advance the regional transportation vision of safer, more bikeable and walkable communities,” Regan said. “Reducing our reliance on driving protects the lake, reduces traffic and over-parking, and supports the health and vitality of our communities.”
