Pedro Rios, a student-athlete at the College of Southern Nevada (CSN), has overcome several challenges during his time at the college. After graduating from Palo Verde High School in 2014, Rios joined CSN’s first cross-country team in 2021. However, academic struggles made him ineligible to compete and led to his suspension. During this difficult period, he also experienced the loss of a loved one.
Despite these setbacks, Rios remained involved with the cross-country program and maintained contact with Coach Manny Astudillo. With support from Coach Astudillo and academic advisor Betsy Anderson, Rios re-enrolled at CSN in 2023. He improved his academic performance, earning straight A’s and regaining eligibility for athletics. An injury later prevented him from competing that season.
In 2025, Rios became a father and took time off to support his family before returning to competition that fall. He is now preparing to graduate in December and expects twins in November.
Coach Astudillo said, “He’s been a great example for the younger athletes. His perseverance and commitment to his goals are exactly what we hope to instill in all of our athletes. I couldn’t be more proud of the man he has become.”
Rios’s story is being highlighted by CSN as part of Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations.
