On October 16 at 10:17 a.m., the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) will participate in the Great Nevada ShakeOut, a statewide earthquake preparedness drill. The event is part of an annual effort to help Nevadans practice safety measures during earthquakes.

CSN, as a member of the Nevada System of Higher Education, will join other colleges and universities across the state in this exercise. The Great Nevada ShakeOut is also connected to a larger international campaign focused on earthquake readiness and resilience.

Nevada ranks as the third most seismically active state in the country, making earthquake preparedness especially important for residents.

At 10:17 a.m., CSN’s emergency communication system will broadcast an earthquake alert across all campuses. During this time, students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to follow standard safety procedures such as dropping to the ground, taking cover under sturdy furniture if available, and holding on until the shaking stops. If no shelter is nearby, individuals should move next to an interior wall and protect their head and neck with their hands.

"Whether you’re on campus, at home, or on the go, take a moment to join in the ShakeOut and make earthquake safety second nature."
