Nevada has been awarded a grant to advance outdoor learning in schools, with the initiative aiming to adapt educational experiences to the state’s desert environment. The Nevada Outdoor Education Advisory Working Group, which supports this effort, has gained significant support across the state, including from educators, families, students, and community members through a high-response survey.

The initiative is backed by a state bill, AB 165, which established a state Outdoor Education Council. The Council will be responsible for developing an outdoor education exemplary award for schools and teachers, and for creating voluntary standards to integrate nature-based learning into teacher professional development and curriculum. The Council also plans to promote the creation of “living schoolyards.”

Sarah Milligan-Toffler, President and CEO of the Children & Nature Network, said, “Nevada’s statewide approach is both ambitious and practical. Their team has broad support, strong community engagement, and a plan that reflects the realities and opportunities of desert communities. We’re thrilled to support Nevada as they implement strategies that could inspire similar efforts nationwide.”

Kendal Scott, Outdoor Education Lead for the Nevada Division of Outdoor Recreation, commented, “This grant affirms the hard work and commitment of our partners and community. By creating statewide recognition and designation programs, along with professional development opportunities, we’re ensuring that every student—and every educator—benefits from the power of nature in education.”

Roz Brooks, Founder and CEO of Blacks in Nature, added, “Nevada’s desert landscape makes our approach distinct, but our goals are universal. Healthy, living schoolyards and access to outdoor learning environments are essential for children’s growth, learning, and well-being. With this catalytic support, we can accelerate statewide change.”

The Nevada Outdoor Education Advisory Working Group was selected in 2023 to join the Nature Everywhere Communities initiative. As part of this program, Nevada has received technical assistance, resources, and opportunities for peer learning. The group has conducted community assessments, statewide surveys, and engagement sessions to gather input from families and youth.

With this grant, Nevada will receive financial support and continued technical assistance. The Nature Everywhere partners will help track outcomes and communicate the impact of the program while seeking additional funding and partnerships.
