Western Nevada College (WNC) will expand its Nursing Program to the Douglas campus after receiving a $4.3 million grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The initiative aims to address the growing need for skilled nurses in Douglas County and nearby rural areas by making healthcare education more accessible.
WNC President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe said, “This project represents a major step forward for WNC, our students and the communities we serve. By expanding our Nursing Program to Douglas County, we are opening doors for more individuals to pursue their passion for healthcare while directly addressing Nevada’s critical workforce needs.”
The planned upgrades at the Douglas campus include a new simulation lab that will mimic both acute and long-term care environments, offering hands-on training for students. Additional improvements involve dedicated testing rooms, technology enhancements, and new equipment to better prepare graduates for current healthcare demands.
Dr. Dana Ryan, WNC Vice President of Academic & Student Affairs, stated, “This expansion will directly respond to the need for skilled healthcare workers in Douglas County, benefit WNC students, and have a lasting impact on the health and vitality of our entire region. It is a project that directly reflects our commitment to preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals for Nevada.”
Jeff Prater, Chief Executive Officer of Carson Valley Health, commented on the development: “We are excited to see the WNC nursing program expand their facility in Douglas County. A program of this caliber in our community encourages local nursing workforce development. This, in turn, addresses local, regional, and national nursing shortages and elevates healthcare overall for generations to come.”
Aspire Academy currently occupies space at the Douglas campus but will end its lease on June 30, 2026. Construction on the new facilities is set to begin in 2026 with completion expected by September 2027.
