Alumna Sam McGuire, a graduate of the TMCC Emergency Management Program, has dedicated her career to public service. Her journey in public service was significantly shaped by her experience as a combat medic in the Army and her role as an intelligence analyst at the Nevada Threat Analysis Center (NTAC). In this position, McGuire focused on safety through prevention, preparedness, response, recovery, education, and enforcement.
Originally from Las Vegas, McGuire’s military background opened up academic and vocational opportunities. She studied criminal justice at Western Nevada College but found the online flexibility of TMCC’s Emergency Management Program more suited to her needs.
“I was fortunate. There were different age groups in the program I took. The best takeaway I’d share with people deciding on this degree or higher education is to utilize networking opportunities. Ask professors who take the time to offer outreach because that’s what will get you somewhere in your career. What you learn in the books is great, but the real-world experience matters most,” said McGuire.
After graduating, McGuire joined NTAC where she underwent a top-secret clearance background check. Her responsibilities included assessing potential dangers at events and reporting on active threats. She worked closely with various agencies during significant events like congressional hearings and presidential visits.
“There’s an emergency response unit in a room the size of a choir auditorium, and they’ll have every agency including the National Guard dispatch and organize. My job entailed helping them communicate with one another through bulletins. They gave us the information they needed to send, and we disseminated it,” said McGuire.
McGuire manages stress by maintaining a balance between work and personal life. She values privacy as a way to focus on family while contributing to their safety without discussing work details with loved ones.
She credits Jeff Whitesides, Emergency Management Program Coordinator, for his leadership during her studies. “It’s forever evolving. There’s never a dull moment… We’ve supported amazing cases where we helped solve some horrible crimes,” said McGuire.
“Come in, do the work, and push the products out… Then you know your diligence was worth it because 95% of the time you don’t get told what happens but once you notice it’s worthwhile,” continued McGuire.
