Dr. Cecilia Vigil, a biology instructor at Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC), has been awarded the 2024 Golden Pinecone Sustainability Award in the Best Educator category. The award recognizes her efforts to integrate environmental stewardship into her teaching. “Education is empowering! It’s easy to incorporate these ideologies into the classroom,” Vigil stated.
The award ceremony took place on October 10 at the Wilbur D. May Museum and was organized by local non-profit greenUp!, Reno + Sparks Chamber of Commerce, and other partners. Dr. Vigil expressed her gratitude, saying, “I accept this award not for myself but for TMCC.”
Edith Duarte, a part-time political science instructor and founder of Western Public Affairs, received the Lobbyist of the Year Award from the Nevada Latino Legislative Caucus on September 7. Duarte commented on her success: “Success, to me, is measured by the clear impact of the policies we help shape.”
In another achievement for TMCC, faculty members Tami Allred and Itzel Woolpert from the Maxine S. Jacobs Nursing Program earned Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) certification. This milestone marks progress towards accreditation through the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH). Jody Covert, Director of the Jacobs Nursing Program, remarked on their accomplishment: “Our faculty’s achievement of the CHSE certification is a testament to their dedication.”
