Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) actively engaged in Workforce Day at the Nevada Legislative Building in Carson City on April 9. This event united community colleges, workforce agencies, and state leaders to foster collaboration between education and employment across Nevada.

TMCC was represented by Amber Burroughs, Associate Director of Workforce Development; Dr. Jeffrey Alexander, Vice President of Academic Affairs; Mike Peyerl, Vice President of Finance and Government Relations; and Kylie Rowe, Executive Director of Research, Marketing and Web Services. Their participation demonstrated TMCC’s commitment to developing workforce pathways meeting industry needs.

On another front, TMCC held its 2025 Earth Day Celebration on April 17, attended by students, staff, faculty, and community members. The day featured various activities focused on sustainability, including workshops, live music, goat encounters, and pollinator planting.

A highlight of this event was the Earth Care Student Writing Contest, which saw 27 essays submitted by TMCC students. These essays underwent a blind-ranking process by a diverse panel, including students and faculty members, to select the top three essays.

The winners of the 2025 Earth Care Essay Contest were announced as follows:

1. Kaylee Kim, taking first place with a $300 prize.
2. Maria Urena, who secured second place with a $200 award.
3. Adriana Aguilar, receiving third place with a $100 award.

During the “Sustainability Action Sit-In” at the Outdoor Plaza, the winning essays were presented to an audience. Kaylee Kim expressed her passion for Earth Day and writing, stating, “I am passionate about Earth Day—I’ve always been since I was a little kid, learning about it in elementary school… I thought it was a great opportunity to express my passion, improve my writing skills, and hey—$300 for 500 words? That seemed like a pretty good deal!”

The event, organized by TMCC’s Campus Connections Office and Sustainability Champions, aimed to inspire discussions on sustainability and personal responsibility. TMCC remains committed to supporting student voices and planning future events to educate, empower, and engage the campus community.
