April marked a period of recognition and appreciation at Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) as the institution celebrated its outstanding students and dedicated employees through a series of events.

The Student Awards Ceremony, hosted by acting SGA President Paula Gomez, was an event filled with inspiration. Gomez shared her personal journey at TMCC, setting the tone for the evening. The ceremony honored club leaders and students who have made significant contributions outside the classroom. This year’s SGA award winners included La Raza for Outstanding New Club, TMCC Volleyball Club for Outstanding Club, Wendy Solorio Ramirez for Outstanding Club Leader, and International Club’s Thanksgiving Potluck for Outstanding Event.

Sophia Roman received the 2025 Nevada Regents’ Scholar Award from Regents Carol Del Carlo and Joe Arrascada in recognition of her academic achievements, leadership, and service to the college community. A separate feature on Roman’s journey will be published soon.

Longtime student leader Katie Avery was also recognized for her support of numerous student events and organizations. “Thank you for everything, Katie—you’ve left a lasting legacy here at TMCC,” was expressed during her farewell.

TMCC President Hilgersom praised the students’ resilience, passion, and drive in her final year as president.

In another event days earlier, TMCC employees gathered to honor colleagues who contribute significantly to the campus environment. Anne Flesher, Sidney Sullivan, Amy Williams, and Cheli Cuevas were recognized with 20 Years of Service Awards.

Special accolades went to Krystyna Sokowski as Classified Employee of the Year; Eriko Sakamura as SGA Outstanding Advisor of the Year; Bill Garand for Distinguished Faculty Excellence in Service; Blisin Hestiyas for Distinguished Faculty Excellence in Teaching; and Julie Muhle posthumously received a Faculty Teaching Excellence Award.

The ceremonies highlighted the collective efforts that build TMCC’s community experience. Each role—whether organizing events or guiding students—is essential to making TMCC a supportive environment.

Awardees were thanked for their contributions: “Your work, passion, and care make TMCC a better place for everyone.”

Photos from these events are available in the TMCC Photo Gallery.
