University Police Services Southern Command has announced a new Memorial and Awareness initiative aimed at strengthening campus connections within the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE). The program is intended to promote unity by using visible symbols to support and heal the community.

The initiative includes UPD officers wearing specially designed patches to raise awareness about issues such as domestic violence prevention, cancer awareness, and sexual assault awareness. The first patch in this series, named “UNLV Strong,” was introduced in December to commemorate one year since the December 6th shooting. This tribute aims to highlight NSHE’s strength and unity while honoring those affected by the tragedy.

“This initiative is a visible reminder of our dedication to fostering awareness and honoring resilience across our NSHE community,” stated Arnold Vasquez, Interim Director of University Police Services, Southern Command. “The ‘UNLV Strong’ patch symbolizes both the strength of the UNLV community and our ongoing commitment to standing alongside those we serve during times of challenge and healing.”

Board Chair Amy J. Carvalho expressed her support for the initiative: “University Police Services continues to demonstrate their commitment to supporting our campus communities through initiatives like this. The ‘UNLV Strong’ patch reflects NSHE’s shared dedication to fostering safety, healing, and awareness across all of our institutions.”

NSHE Chancellor Patricia Charlton also voiced her approval: “The Memorial and Awareness initiative reflects the compassion and unity that define NSHE. Through these efforts, University Police Services highlights the power of remembrance and the importance of awareness, ensuring that our campuses remain supportive and connected places for all.”

Future patches will address additional areas of concern, reinforcing UPD’s role as a trusted partner in creating safe and inclusive campus environments.
