The University of Nevada, Las Vegas, reflects on the one-year anniversary of the tragic events that occurred on December 6, 2023. A message from Board of Regents Chair Amy J. Carvalho, Vice Chair Jeffrey S. Downs, and Chancellor Patricia Charlton highlights the profound impact this day has had on the university community and beyond.

“We honor the lives lost—dedicated educators who inspired their students and contributed profoundly to our academic community,” they stated. The loss has resonated deeply across campuses, affecting not only those who knew them personally but also many others whose lives were enriched by their work.

The message emphasized the resilience and unity shown by the community in response to adversity. “On that day, the swift and courageous actions of our campus police officers undoubtedly saved countless lives,” they acknowledged. This bravery is seen as a testament to all public safety personnel within the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE).

Over the past year, NSHE has focused on enhancing campus safety through various initiatives such as additional security personnel and training for officers. “These initiatives reflect our commitment to providing a secure and supportive environment for learning and growth,” they noted.

Looking forward, NSHE plans to continue building on these efforts with ongoing collaborations with campus communities and public safety teams to improve emergency preparedness.

“The strength of our community lies in our collective resolve,” they concluded. They aim to foster a culture that honors those lost by upholding values like education, inclusivity, and mutual respect.
