UNLV faculty contribute expertise on diverse topics amid new year activities

Jingle bells have been replaced with school bells as UNLV kicks off the spring semester. The university’s experts have been active in media discussions on a variety of topics, ranging from wildfires in Los Angeles to political changes in the White House.

UNLV’s public policy expert Ben Leffel has commented on balancing climate change action with sustainability and resource management. Meanwhile, economists Nic Irwin and Shawn McCoy have explained the implications of building in wildfire-prone areas for the housing market. Hospitality professor Amanda Belarmino discussed the impact of fires on tourism, while ecologist Drew Peltier highlighted drought conditions as a factor contributing to fire severity.

Public health professor Lung-Wen Antony Chen spoke about air quality during wildfires, and aviation historian Dan Bubb addressed challenges faced by aircraft involved in firefighting operations.

In honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, UNLV hosted an educational event featuring an exhibit curated by history students and Heidi Straus from the Nevada Center for Humanity. History professor Gregory Brown discussed its significance.

The New York Times interviewed finance chair J. Daniel Chi about financial literacy tools on campuses. Chi also provided insights to Benzinga regarding top stocks for 2025.

Aviation expert Dan Bubb shared knowledge about boarding pass codes with CNBC Indonesia and other outlets regarding airport retail markets and flight safety issues following a midair collision.

Architecture professor Glenn Nowak was featured discussing repurposing old railroad stations into new uses, while transportation researcher Shashi Nambisan contributed to stories about traffic sign colors.

In university news, President Keith E. Whitfield delivered his State of the University address outlining UNLV’s achievements and future plans. U2 donated $300,000 to support music education at UNLV’s College of Fine Arts through scholarships and experiential funds.

ESPN partnered with UNLV’s International Gaming Institute for responsible betting practices research. Additionally, Las Vegas Sands’ donation established the Sands Institute for Chinese Language and Culture at UNLV offering language classes and cultural exhibitions.
