Western Nevada College’s ROADS program, in collaboration with the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR), is assisting students in pursuing new professional careers. The Realizing Opportunities for the American Dream to Succeed (ROADS) initiative helps participants by removing obstacles that might hinder their educational progress at WNC. This support includes tuition assistance, mentorship, professional development opportunities, and potential employment connections.
Anthony Wilson discovered the benefits of the ROADS program during a visit to the JOIN office in Reno while seeking a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). “The program paid for everything,” Wilson said. He also appreciated the constant communication from Kara Spracklin, the ROADS Workforce Development Liaison.
The program prepares students for various careers such as manufacturing, health care, information technology, and building trades. Students have received gas cards and help with rent and car repairs. They are also referred to community services for food donations.
“The ROADS program provides students with additional guidance and support throughout their educational experience at WNC,” Spracklin stated. “We are invested in helping our students reach their goals.”
Wilson completed WNC’s CDL prep program in Fallon and secured employment at JW Welding immediately after graduation. “I wanted to earn my CDL to learn a new trade as well as make a livable wage,” he explained.
Spracklin highlighted the success stories of students like Wilson as inspirational. “It’s been truly inspiring to see the achievements of our students during and after the program,” she said.
CDL licensees have various job opportunities including light truck delivery, heavy equipment transport, city bus driving, chauffeur services, school bus driving, beverage delivery, and patient transportation services.
“If you want to make a better wage…my advice is to obtain your CDL,” Wilson advised.
