The Year of Mental Health and Wellness at Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC), promoted throughout the 2023-24 academic year, was deemed a success. The initiative was launched in response to growing concerns about student mental health, exacerbated by academic pressures, financial stress, and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Recommended by the TMCC Health and Wellness Committee and the Planning Council, "There has been great participation across campus," said YeVonne Allen, Executive Director of Student Life and Development.
Anxiety and depression are prevalent mental health issues among college students. As part of the initiative, students, faculty, and staff were invited to participate in a Healthy Minds Survey presented by the TMCC Counseling Department in partnership with the Jed Foundation. The survey revealed that 77% of respondents experienced mental or emotional difficulties impacting their academic performance for one or more days.
During the 2023–24 academic year, TMCC counselors had 1,113 appointments with 507 students. According to TMCC Counselor Erin Frock, “the majority of students we see for personal counseling need support in managing anxiety and/or depression.”
The Year of Mental Health and Wellness emphasized community involvement. Activities ranged from a keynote address by Dr. John Francis during Fall Semester 2023 Kick-Off to the rollout of a 24/7 crisis support line called Wizard Wellness in December. These efforts aimed to promote a culture of wellness across campus.
A Mental Health Carnival and Fun Run took place on Dandini Campus in October, featuring yoga, games, and healthy snacks. The event highlighted the connection between physical activity and mental health benefits. “Exercise can help us to practice good mental health," said Erin Frock.
Mental Health First Aid training was also provided to over 70 faculty and staff members during the academic year. Led by 16 facilitators, this training aimed to equip participants with skills necessary to assist those experiencing mental health crises.
Student leaders contributed as well through initiatives like the SGA Mental Health Advisory Committee which began offering meetings for students in recovery both in person and via Zoom.
As TMCC transitions into the 2024-25 academic year with new themes emerging, it remains committed to fostering an environment where all community members feel supported. Mental health is acknowledged as a critical component of overall well-being at TMCC.
