College of Southern Nevada to host spirit rally on September 11

The College of Southern Nevada (CSN) will host a "Spirit Rally" on September 11, 2024, at the North Las Vegas Campus. The event, organized by the Associated Students of the College of Southern Nevada, aims to honor 9/11, support first responders, and celebrate CSN athletes.


Faculty & staff participate in first annual volleyball tournament

The CSN Cheer Team recently gathered onlookers and a crowd of 72 participating faculty, administrators, staff, and student workers before engaging in the first annual Faculty & Staff Volleyball Tournament at the NLV campus Sports Center.


CSN hosts English & Creative Writing Mixer for students

The College of Southern Nevada (CSN) is set to host an English & Creative Writing Mixer, aimed at providing students with a platform to meet fellow writers, connect with professors, and gain insights into upcoming courses. The event is scheduled for September 12 from 3-5 pm at the NLV Horn Theater.


Nevada offers new grant opportunities for anti-violence programs

Nevada Attorney General Aaron D. Ford has announced the availability of grants aimed at combating domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. The funding opportunity is open to Nevada law enforcement agencies, prosecutorial offices, courts, and non-profit organizations through the Services-Training-Officers-Prosecutor (STOP) and Sexual Assault Services Program (SASP) grants.


TMCC announces new art exhibits featuring faculty works

Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) Art Galleries are showcasing four new exhibitions this fall, including the 53rd Annual Art Faculty Exhibition. The exhibitions will run from Monday, Sept. 2 to Thursday, Sept. 26 at various locations on the Dandini Campus. An opening artists’ reception is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 4, from 5–7 p.m. at the V. James Eardley Student Center and Red Mountain Gallery on the third floor of the Red Mountain Building.


NSHE awarded $750K grant by NASA EPSCoR for Moon-to-Mars robotics research

The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) has been awarded a $750,000 grant from NASA’s Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR). The funding is intended to develop a statewide network of robotics research aimed at advancing NASA’s Moon-to-Mars objectives and facilitating future deep space exploration. Pahrump DMV set to reopen after fire and flood disruptions

The Pahrump Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is set to reopen on Thursday, August 29, following a month-long closure due to an electrical fire and subsequent flooding. The State Fire Marshall's office conducted a final inspection last Monday, approving the reopening. Due to damage sustained by computers and other equipment, only five out of ten service windows will be operational.


Construction industry urges better federal policies amid severe worker shortage

The nation’s failure to invest in construction workforce education and training programs is having a measurable impact on the country’s ability to build infrastructure and other projects, according to a workforce survey conducted by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) and Arcoro, an HR technology company supporting the construction industry. The survey revealed that 94 percent of contractors report difficulties filling open positions, prompting calls for better federal workforce policies.


Vegas Chamber announces general election endorsements across various races

Las Vegas, NV – The Vegas Chamber has announced its list of endorsements for the upcoming General Election. The endorsements cover various races including the Nevada State Senate, State Assembly, Board of Regents, State Board of Education, Clark County Commission, Clark County Board of School Trustees, and City Council. Additionally, recommendations for two state ballot questions were provided.


Construction employment increases across majority of US metro areas from July '23-'24

Construction employment increased in 232, or 65 percent, of 358 metro areas between July 2023 and July 2024, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) of new government employment data. Association officials noted that their latest workforce survey shows contractors are still eager to hire more employees but face difficulty finding qualified workers.


Walker Basin farmers collaborate on groundwater conservation initiative

“The Fulstone Family has been supportive of the initiative proposed and funded by The Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources,” said Steven Fulstone. “This creative solution to a difficult problem will help preserve our underground aquifer for future generations, hopefully without the need for any future curtailment possibilities.”


Child Development Center wins seventh consecutive Best of Carson City Award

The Child Development Center (CDC) at Western Nevada College (WNC) has been recognized with its seventh consecutive Best of Carson City Award. The award ceremony took place on Monday, Aug. 26, and was attended by WNC President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe, Foundation Executive Director Niki Gladys, Chief Financial Officer Coral Lopez, and staff members.

Full-term class registration remains open until Friday, Aug. 30. After this date, late registration requires instructor approval and must be completed by Sept. 24.

Nevada's GOED launches virtual reality career mapping program

Under the leadership of Tammy Westergard, GOED launched a groundbreaking program called Individual Career Mapping (ICM) and Training Delivery Model. ICM leverages the power of virtual reality to help close gaps in career navigation and training for underrepresented groups. Insurify report finds Nevada is fourth most expensive state for car insurance

Insurify released a report on August 11, which found that Nevada is the fourth most expensive state for car insurance in the nation, with car insurance costs predicted to increase by a total of 20% this year.


DRI holds inaugural AWE+ Summit on wildfire recovery

The Desert Research Institute (DRI), in collaboration with the DRI Foundation, held its inaugural AWE+ Summit this week in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event, titled "Wildfire Recovery and Resilience: Working Across Silos to Drive Solutions," aimed to encourage communities to adopt measures that enhance resilience and adaptability to wildfires.


Tmcc celebrates perfect nclex pass rate; natural history museum unveils new displays

Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) is celebrating a significant achievement as the Maxine S. Jacobs Nursing Program reported a 100% pass rate for its graduates on the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) in the first quarter of 2024. This accomplishment places TMCC's program at the top in both Nevada and the United States.
