Nevada Division of Insurance Offers Resources and Support for Citizens Affected by Davis Fire and Evacuations

CARSON CITY, Nevada - As the situation surrounding the Davis Fire continues to evolve, impacting approximately 14,000 residents through evacuations, the Nevada Division of Insurance has outlined a series of recommended actions for those affected. The Division emphasizes the unpredictable nature of wildfires in Nevada and stresses the importance of preparation and responsiveness.

“The events surrounding the Davis Fire are a challenge to all affected Nevadans. The Division of Insurance joins with all other State Agencies working to keep loss of property to a minimum,” said Insurance Commissioner Scott Kipper. “My top priority is to safeguard all Nevadans, particularly vulnerable consumers and those affected by disaster. The Division serves as a resource for all Nevadans, especially those affected by the Davis Fire.”

In case of evacuation, residents are advised to contact their insurance agent once they have safely evacuated. It is important to keep physical or digital access to policy information readily available for review. Adherence to state and city advisories on evacuation protocols remains paramount.

The Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District is managing the fire response efforts. Information can be accessed via their social media channels:

To prepare for potential wildfires, residents should review their insurance policies thoroughly and ensure contact information is up-to-date. Both physical and digital copies should be maintained for easy access during emergencies.

Creating a home inventory is also recommended by the Division to facilitate insurance claims processing in case of loss. Resources such as the National Association of Insurance Commissioners' free Home Inventory app can assist homeowners and renters in this process.

On September 8, 2024, Governor Joe Lombardo declared a state of emergency due to the Davis Fire which has burned approximately 5,000 acres in northern Nevada and led to evacuations affecting around 20,000 people from residential areas and businesses. This declaration directs state agencies to coordinate efforts through the Nevada Operations Center alongside local government bodies.

The mission of the Nevada Division of Insurance is focused on protecting consumer rights within the insurance industry while ensuring insurer financial solvency.
