Nevada DMV extends hours ahead of election

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has announced extended business hours to assist customers needing credentials to vote in the upcoming election. From Monday, October 21, 2024, through Saturday, November 2, 2024, DMV metro offices will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., Monday through Saturday. During this period, no appointments will be necessary.


Carson City funds free mental health support for Western Nevada College students

Carson City has allocated a $20,000 grant to support mental health services for students at Western Nevada College (WNC) through the WNC Foundation. The initiative offers free mental health counseling via BetterMynd for the 2024-25 academic year.


Nevada Farm Bureau to hold regenerative ag workshop at annual meeting

The Nevada Farm Bureau is preparing for its 2024 Annual Meeting, which will take place at the 3C in Fallon, NV, from November 7 to 9. The event will begin with a morning-long workshop on regenerative agricultural production practices on Thursday, November 7.


United Way offers free language access services for nonprofits and agencies

In recognition of International Translation Day, United Way of Southern Nevada (UWSN) is drawing attention to its Language Access Services. These services provide interpretation and translation to community nonprofits and government agencies at no cost. The initiative is part of UWSN’s Language Access Project, funded by a Congressional Appropriation supported by Congresswoman Dina Titus.


Nevada announces 2024 Early Educators of the Year

The Nevada Department of Education has announced the recipients of the 2024 Nevada Early Educators of the Year award. The honorees are Leigh Todd, a preschool teacher at Myrtle Tate Elementary School in Las Vegas, and Adrianna Salas, an infant/toddler teacher at the Child and Family Research Center - Early Head Start Program at the University of Nevada, Reno.


United Way of Southern Nevada launches annual suit drive for women returning to work

United Way of Southern Nevada (UWSN) is set to launch the 17th Annual Women United Suit Drive starting October 1. The drive invites donors to contribute gently used business attire, including suits, dresses, hospital scrubs, shoes, and accessories at various locations across the valley.


Western Nevada College's observatory invites public to free star party on Oct. 26

Jack C. Davis Observatory at Western Nevada College is hosting its next star party on October 26. These events are held twice a month and are open to the public without charge. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about astronomy and use various telescopes to observe stars from the observatory's location above the college campus.


National Amazon wage increases boosts 20,000 Nevada workers

Amazon has announced a pay increase for its front-line team members that brings the average total compensation for workers to $29, affecting the 20,000 jobs held by workers across the state of Nevada. The wage increases totaled an additional $2.2 billion of investment nationwide.


College of Southern Nevada announces major website redesign initiative

The College of Southern Nevada is preparing for a significant redesign of its website. This initiative will be led by the CSN Marketing and Communications Department, aiming to improve the site's design, functionality, and accessibility to better serve students, faculty, staff, and the community.


TMCC Art Galleries announce fall exhibitions featuring local artists

Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) Art Galleries are set to unveil four new exhibitions. These include two curated exhibitions featuring the 2022-23 Reno City Artist Rossitza Todorova and the ART 209 Gallery Practices class, along with solo exhibitions by two local artists. The exhibits will be on display from Monday, Oct. 7 to Thursday, Oct. 31 at various locations on the Dandini Campus. An opening reception is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 9 from 5–7 p.m. at the V. James Eardley Student Center and Red Mountain Gallery.


Nevada schools set for Week of Respect from Sept. 30-Oct. 4

Schools across Nevada will observe the Week of Respect from September 30 to October 4. This annual event, established under NRS 236.073, is proclaimed by the Governor during the first week of October each year.


Uber and Nevada Transportation Authority crack down on fake rideshare drivers over Labor Day weekend

Earlier this month, Uber and the Nevada Transportation Authority (NTA) teamed up to combat the growing problem of fake rideshare drivers in Las Vegas. The crackdown targeted unlicensed individuals posing as Uber and Lyft drivers, posing serious safety risks to unsuspecting passengers.


CSN hosts screening of "Sign the Show" during Deaf Awareness Month

Bear severely injured in Davis Fire euthanized due to worsening condition

The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW), along with the Animal Ark Wildlife Sanctuary and Nature Care, have announced that the Davis Bear's condition worsened significantly since Friday, September 20. Consequently, it was decided by Animal Ark’s veterinarian, Dr. Lesli Spears, and NDOW's Wildlife Health Specialist, Dr. Nate LaHue, that euthanasia was in the animal’s best interest.


NSHE secures $519K DHS grant for campus safety enhancement

The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) has secured a $519,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) under the Targeted Violence and Terrorism Prevention (TVTP) Grant Program. This funding will support NSHE’s “Threat Prevention, Safety, and Awareness Initiative,” aimed at enhancing safety measures for students, faculty, staff, and visitors across its higher education and research institutes.
