Martha Panduro named AFA's employee of the month for August 2024

Martha Panduro has been named the Administrative Faculty Assembly’s (AFA) Employee of the Month for August 2024. Serving as an Academic Advisor at the Henderson Campus, Panduro was nominated by Ann Thompson.


ATRA names Colorado 'Lawsuit Inferno' amid legislative changes

The American Tort Reform Association (ATRA) has labeled Colorado a "Lawsuit Inferno" in its new Legislative HeatCheck report. The Democratic-controlled legislature of Colorado has pursued extensive liability-expanding legislation this year, despite opposition from the business community and Governor Jared Polis' vetoes of several significant bills. As a result, Colorado is now considered one of the worst state legislative bodies for expanding liability.


Nevada DMV launches AI-enhanced contact center for improved customer service

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has launched a new and improved contact center. Partnering with Amazon Web Services (AWS), the DMV developed a system that integrates generative artificial intelligence with real-person assistance to enhance customer service.


Steven Jacobo to speak at WNC Foundation's Reach for the Stars Gala

Nevada allocates $1.7 million for workforce training initiatives

The Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) Board has approved $1,693,230 from the Workforce Innovations for a New Nevada (WINN) fund to support three industry-led workforce training programs. These programs aim to enhance training in logistics, nursing, and mining.


Western Nevada College urges use of remaining Silver State Opportunity Grant funds

As the Fall 2024 semester approaches at Western Nevada College (WNC), the Silver State Opportunity Grant (SSOG) remains an underutilized source of student funding. With classes starting on August 26, students are encouraged to take advantage of this need-based grant created by the Nevada Legislature in 2015 for those attending community and state colleges within the Nevada System of Higher Education.


Nevada DOT announces Spaghetti Bowl ramp closure for emergency repair

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has announced the closure of the northbound I-15 ramp to southbound I-515/US-95 in the Spaghetti Bowl for emergency repairs. The closure is necessary to address damage to the barrier rail caused by a recent crash. For the safety of all travelers, crews will be removing and replacing the damaged barrier rail.


Nevada confirms two cases of rabies in bats

The Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA) Animal Disease Laboratory has confirmed two cases of rabies this year. The detections were made in bats from Carson City and Clark County.

Nevada DMV suspends walk-in services due to excessive summer heat

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced today the temporary suspension of "Walk-In Wednesday" services at its Decatur, Flamingo, Sahara, Henderson, and Reno office locations due to intense summertime heat. Starting July 10, 2024, metropolitan offices will shift Wednesday services to appointment-only until temperatures return to more typical levels.

Nevada Department seeks public feedback on language access plan revision

The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) is seeking public input on its revised Language Access Plan (LAP). The LAP aims to provide a clear protocol for NDOW personnel when offering services to individuals with limited English proficiency. This initiative began in 2022 following the establishment of the first-ever LAP as mandated by Senate Bill 318.


Possible wolf sighting under investigation by Nevada wildlife department

On March 17, a pilot working with a helicopter capture crew contracted by the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) reported spotting three suspected wolves near Merritt Mountain, north of Elko, during a moose collaring project. The sighting was immediately communicated to NDOW biologists, who then coordinated with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service to search the area for confirmation.


Nevada approves new hunting tag quotas amid public concern over mule deer

The Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners has approved the big game hunting tag quotas for the 2024-2025 season. The decision follows recommendations from the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) and input from County Advisory Boards to Manage Wildlife. While most species quotas, including antelope, elk, mountain goat, bear, and bighorn sheep, align with NDOW's suggestions, significant changes were made to mule deer quotas due to public concerns about population declines in northeastern Nevada.

One of his fifth-grade students, Noel DeVries, was announced as the winner of the Nevada Free Fishing Day Poster Contest.
