Mesquite celebrates opening of skilled training classrooms

The grand opening of two new skilled training lab classrooms for Entry-Level Air-Conditioning Technology and Medical Assisting was celebrated at the rural campus in Mesquite. These programs are designed to provide training in high-demand fields, offering local residents opportunities to start new careers or enhance their skills with stackable college credits.

Nevada regents appoint firms for chancellor and CSN president searches

The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) Board of Regents is advancing its search for a permanent Chancellor and a new President for the College of Southern Nevada (CSN). Committees in charge of each search have appointed executive search firms to assist with the process.


Vegas Chamber announces move to Civic Plaza after council approval

The Vegas Chamber has announced its plan to relocate its headquarters to the new City of Las Vegas Civic Plaza in 2025. This move involves a lease agreement with the City of Las Vegas for 13,000 square feet of office space, with a potential duration of up to 20 years.


TMCC receives engine donations; launches updated website

Peterbilt Truck Parts and Equipment, along with Silver State International, have donated the latest ISX 15 and ISL9 engines equipped with Allison Transmissions to Truckee Meadows Community College’s (TMCC) Diesel Program. The donation ceremony took place on August 28 at the William N. Pennington Applied Technology Center, where a snow-white cab was displayed.


United Way hosts ninth annual Day of Caring

Last week, United Way of Southern Nevada (UWSN) hosted its ninth annual Day of Caring, presented by PNC Bank. The event, held in collaboration with local nonprofits, schools, and community organizations, began with a celebration at Town Square Park on September 13.


Western Nevada College raises $120K at Reach for The Stars Gala

The Western Nevada College Foundation’s seventh annual Reach for the Stars Gala: Giving Back to the Future raised $120,000 to support student success and enhance campus programs and facilities. The "Back to the Future" theme created a futuristic atmosphere at the event, which saw more than 300 attendees come together in support of the college’s mission.


United Way hosts ninth annual Day of Caring on Sept. 13

United Way of Southern Nevada (UWSN) is set to host its ninth annual Day of Caring on September 13, an event aimed at mobilizing hundreds of volunteers for community service. CSN announces participation in National HSIs Week

From Sept. 9-13, 2024, the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) will participate in National Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs) Week, an observance initiated by the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities. This week acknowledges the significant contributions of the 572 HSIs nationwide, including CSN, for their role in educating and empowering Hispanic youth.


TMCC announces new art exhibits featuring faculty works

Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) Art Galleries are showcasing four new exhibitions this fall, including the 53rd Annual Art Faculty Exhibition. The exhibitions will run from Monday, Sept. 2 to Thursday, Sept. 26 at various locations on the Dandini Campus. An opening artists’ reception is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 4, from 5–7 p.m. at the V. James Eardley Student Center and Red Mountain Gallery on the third floor of the Red Mountain Building.


Child Development Center wins seventh consecutive Best of Carson City Award

The Child Development Center (CDC) at Western Nevada College (WNC) has been recognized with its seventh consecutive Best of Carson City Award. The award ceremony took place on Monday, Aug. 26, and was attended by WNC President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe, Foundation Executive Director Niki Gladys, Chief Financial Officer Coral Lopez, and staff members.


Western Nevada College offers ongoing enrollment options for fall semester

Western Nevada College (WNC) welcomes students to the 2024 Fall Semester. For those still planning to enroll, Student Services is available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Full-term class registration remains open until Friday, Aug. 30. After this date, late registration requires instructor approval and must be completed by Sept. 24.


Nevada's GOED launches virtual reality career mapping program

Under the leadership of Tammy Westergard, GOED launched a groundbreaking program called Individual Career Mapping (ICM) and Training Delivery Model. ICM leverages the power of virtual reality to help close gaps in career navigation and training for underrepresented groups. Users don a VR headset and dive into virtual workplaces, honing new skills.


UNLV Alumni Association names Lonnie Wright Alumnus of the Year

As the director and professor of the hotel management program at CSN, Dr. Lonnie Wright has dedicated over three decades to the fields of gaming, resort management, and hospitality. He is also the founder of the Hospitality International Training Academy, a school focused on training culinary industry workers. His influence extends globally, having been recruited by the American College of Singapore to develop a hotel college and being sought after by top hospitality companies and government agencies for his expertise.


Western Nevada College announces Summer Session Dean's List for 2024

Nearly 100 students earned the academic honor of making Western Nevada College’s 2024 Summer Dean’s List. To earn this achievement during the summer session, 99 students attained a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and completed six or more units of classes.


Elko DMV announces delayed opening due to employee training

The Elko Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office will have a delayed start on Wednesday, August 14, due to employee training. The office will open at 1 p.m. and close regularly at 5 p.m.


Nevada releases new dyslexia guidelines following state mandate

CARSON CITY, Nev. – The Nevada Department of Education has announced the release of a new dyslexia resource guide. The documents aim to assist school districts and public charter schools in identifying and providing instructional support for students who have or are at risk of dyslexia.

Reno-Sparks Heat Mapping Project seeks volunteers amid summer heat

Reno, Nev. (August 2, 2024) – A consortium of organizations led by the Nevada State Climate Office is seeking volunteers for the Reno-Sparks Heat Mapping Project on August 10. The initiative aims to study urban heat islands and their effects on the region. Volunteers will drive or navigate predetermined routes with GPS-equipped temperature and humidity sensors attached to their vehicles.
