USGS funds study on wildfire impacts on flood risks led by Guo Yu

Reno, Nev. (September 10, 2024) – Guo Yu, an assistant research professor of hydrometeorology, along with collaborator Luke McGuire from the University of Arizona, has been awarded a three-year grant from the USGS Water Resources Research Act Program. The funding will be used to expand Yu's research on how repeated wildfires impact flooding risk in communities.

Worker shortages contribute significantly as US construction spending drops by $2 billion

Construction spending slid 0.3 percent from June to July, pulled down by declines in private residential and nonresidential construction, according to an analysis of a new government report that the Associated General Contractors of America released today. Association officials said their newly released workforce survey indicates the decreases are attributable in part to a shortage of skilled workers, and they called on the federal government to increase support for programs to prepare more workers for construction careers.
Nevada expands biliteracy seal to include Great Basin Native American languages

The Nevada Department of Education is collaborating with the Great Basin tribes to enable students who demonstrate proficiency in a Native American language to earn the Nevada State Seal of Biliteracy. In July, the department and tribal leaders held workshops at the Nevada Museum of Art to develop student assessments for gauging proficiency.
