CSN opens nominations for Sam Lieberman Regents’ Scholar Award

The College of Southern Nevada (CSN) is calling for nominations for the Sam Lieberman Regents’ Scholar Award. This annual award recognizes one exceptional CSN student for their academic achievements, leadership skills, and community service contributions.


NASPA Nevada hosts panel discussion on student affairs leadership

On October 1, from noon to 1:00 p.m., NASPA Nevada will celebrate the state’s student affairs leaders in an online panel discussion. Those interested in the individuals shaping student life across Nevada’s higher education institutions will have the chance to meet and interact with them.


TMCC emphasizes pride and belonging throughout 2024-25 academic year

Throughout the 2024-25 academic year, Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) employees and students will focus on ensuring everyone feels welcome. The theme "Pride and Belonging" has been chosen to emphasize this goal.


Basic nursing skills class available at Western Nevada College's Douglas campus

Future nursing students at Western Nevada College have a new opportunity to take the Basic Nursing Skills (NURS 129) class on the Douglas campus. This eight-week course, which satisfies a WNC nursing program admission requirement, is scheduled from October 21 through December 14. The class will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m.


TMCC receives engine donations; launches updated website

Peterbilt Truck Parts and Equipment, along with Silver State International, have donated the latest ISX 15 and ISL9 engines equipped with Allison Transmissions to Truckee Meadows Community College’s (TMCC) Diesel Program. The donation ceremony took place on August 28 at the William N. Pennington Applied Technology Center, where a snow-white cab was displayed.


Roger D. Gehring Academy named National Blue Ribbon School

The U.S. Department of Education has recognized Roger D. Gehring Academy of Science and Technology as a 2024 National Blue Ribbon School. This distinction was earned through the nomination by the Nevada Department of Education’s Office of Student and School Supports.


CSN schedules town hall meeting for October 3

CSN will hold a Town Hall meeting on Thursday, Oct. 3, from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the North Las Vegas campus in the Student Union Ballrooms. The event will also be accessible live via Microsoft Teams for those preferring to join virtually.


CSN hosts Level Up Skills Fair for student success

The College of Southern Nevada (CSN) is hosting a Level Up Skills Fair aimed at helping students enhance their academic skills. The event offers assistance with navigating Canvas, improving study techniques, and managing math anxiety. Additionally, information on scholarships and other resources will be available.


Grant supports clean energy education program in Nevada

The Desert Research Institute's (DRI) STEM Education Program has secured a grant from the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Environmental Management to support Nevada’s clean energy workforce pipeline. The funding, amounting to nearly $2 million, aims to equip the next generation with essential knowledge and technical skills for employment in sectors such as clean energy, waste management, and environmental remediation.


Congress extends funding for Lake Tahoe environmental program through 2034

Congress has approved a bill to reauthorize the Lake Tahoe Restoration Act (LTRA), extending funding authorizations for approximately $300 million through 2034. This move continues federal support for the Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program (EIP), which has been instrumental in conservation efforts since its inception in 1997.


Nevada Division of State Lands invites grant proposals for Lake Tahoe preservation

The Nevada Division of State Lands (NDSL) has announced that it is now accepting proposals for its Nevada Lake Tahoe License Plate grant program. The program offers up to $1,000,000 in grants for projects aimed at preserving and restoring the Lake Tahoe Basin.


Catherine Ivanovich wins Peter B. Wagner Memorial Award for Women in Atmospheric Sciences

DRI has announced that Catherine (Casey) Ivanovich from Columbia University is the recipient of the 26th annual Peter B. Wagner Memorial Award for Women in Atmospheric Sciences. The award ceremony took place at the DRI campus in Reno on September 23, 2024.


Construction employment rises in majority of US states over past year

Construction employment increased in 39 states between August 2023 and August 2024, while 27 states and the District of Columbia added jobs from July to last month, according to a new analysis of federal employment data released by the Associated General Contractors of America. Association officials indicated that tight labor market conditions are making it difficult for firms to find enough workers.


CSN professors present on AI at national conference

Two professors from the College of Southern Nevada (CSN), Ayla Koch and Dr. Mary Ann Hughes Butts, participated in the "Teaching and Learning with AI" conference held in Orlando, Florida, from July 22-24. The event was hosted by the University of Central Florida and attracted educators from 49 states and eight countries.


Lake Tahoe addresses workforce housing crisis through policy changes

Today, there is region-wide consensus that housing and transportation are among the greatest issues of our time. The severe decline of affordable housing options in the Lake Tahoe Region is affecting environmental quality and the vibrancy of its communities. Safe, thriving communities help provide the infrastructure, workforce, and investment needed to ensure Lake Tahoe’s built environment supports a sustainable natural environment. A common topic in public discourse around housing is that transportation solutions are integral to good housing solutions.


CSN hosts event on understanding sample ballots ahead of November election

As the November election approaches, the College of Southern Nevada is offering students and the community an opportunity to get vote-ready with an informative event on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2024. The event, titled “Understanding Your Sample Ballot and Making Informed Choices,” will run from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. across all three CSN campuses: Henderson, North Las Vegas, and Charleston. Attendees can participate in person or virtually via Zoom.


CSN hosts vice presidential debate watch gathering on October 1

The College of Southern Nevada (CSN) invites students and community members to a Vice Presidential Debate Watch Gathering on Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2024. The event will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the North Las Vegas Campus, Student Union, Room 121.


Uber partners with MADD to address rising DUI rates in Las Vegas

Uber partners with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) and Anheuser-Busch in the "Decide to Ride" campaign, a joint initiative launched to combat drunk driving in the U.S..


Pizza with CSN presidents set for September and November

Students at the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) are invited to attend "Pizza with the Presidents" on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at the Charleston Campus Student Union. A second session will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at the North Las Vegas Campus Student Union.


CSN leaders advocate for higher education policy in Washington, D.C

Vice President Clarissa Cota and Executive Director of Grants & Special Projects Frank R. Woodbeck recently participated in the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce’s annual fly-in to Washington, D.C., advocating for higher education policy and building essential connections with lawmakers.
