Board of Regents meets at Western Nevada College after five-year hiatus

Western Nevada College (WNC) hosted the Board of Regents, the governing body for the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE), for its quarterly meeting on Thursday and Friday in Carson Nugget Hall. This marked the first time in five years that the meeting was held on WNC's Carson City campus.

United Way provides $462K in utility aid through senior expos

LAS VEGAS, NV (Sept. 6, 2024) – Following the success of four Project REACH Senior Expos across Las Vegas, United Way of Southern Nevada (UWSN), in collaboration with NV Energy, Southwest Gas, and various community partners, has provided support to over 1,748 households in Southern Nevada. During these events, $462,035.59 was distributed for past-due electric, gas, water, and sewage bills.

Construction sector adds thousands of jobs amid record low unemployment

The construction sector added 34,000 jobs in August while the industry’s unemployment rate fell to 3.2 percent, the lowest August rate in the 25-year history of the data, according to an analysis of new government data released by the Associated General Contractors of America today. Association officials noted that the unemployment rate and results from a recently released workforce survey conducted by the association and Arcoro indicate that firms would likely have hired more workers if they could find qualified candidates.
Career fair at North Las Vegas campus set for Sept. 25

Study finds satellites can accurately monitor groundwater use

Reno, Nev. (September 5, 2024) – Drought remains a significant concern in the Western U.S., prompting water managers to develop groundwater management plans to conserve this essential resource. Groundwater is often pumped to the surface for crop irrigation, with meters traditionally measuring the flow of pumped water. However, these meters are scarce. Scientists at the Desert Research Institute (DRI) investigated whether OpenET, a platform that measures evapotranspiration using satellite data, could bridge this information gap.
