Settlement reached in Lake Tahoe workforce housing litigation

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) and Mountain Area Preservation (MAP) have reached a settlement agreement over a lawsuit brought by MAP against affordable housing policies approved by the TRPA Governing Board in December 2023. The litigation aimed to block new land use policies in the Lake Tahoe Region that combined incentives for water quality, transportation, and workforce housing improvements.

Reno-Sparks heat mapping project seeks volunteers

Reno, Nev. (July 2, 2024) – Scientists from the Desert Research Institute (DRI) and the University of Nevada, Reno are recruiting volunteers for a one-day campaign to map extreme heat across Washoe County. On July 27th, community volunteers will collect thousands of temperature and humidity measurements during three one-hour periods from early morning through evening. Sensors will be distributed at a central meeting location, which volunteers will attach to their vehicles before driving along predetermined routes. Volunteers can serve as drivers or navigators.

Nevada settles with Abra over unlicensed cryptocurrency operations

The Nevada Financial Institutions Division has joined 24 other state financial regulatory agencies in taking collective action against Plutus Financial, Inc., Abra Trading, LLC, Plutus Financial Holdings, Inc., and Plutus Lending, LLC (collectively known as "Abra"), along with CEO and largest equity owner William "Bill" Barhydt. National Pollinator Week highlights importance of preserving Nevada's ecosystems

These range from generalists to specialists like the yucca moth, which uniquely pollinates Joshua trees and other yucca species vital to the Mojave Desert ecosystem. Study reveals ecological impacts caused by plastisphere in Mekong River

DRI researchers Monica Arienzo and Rachel Kozloski are co-authors of a new study examining the ecological impacts of plastic waste in Cambodia’s Mekong River. The Mekong River, which supports the livelihoods of more than 60 million people, faces significant plastic pollution challenges. Published in the August 2024 issue of Water Research, the study found that bacteria thriving on plastic waste significantly alter water quality and impact ecosystem services, particularly in areas with mismanaged waste.
